Camino Central Dalmatia

Camino Central Dalmatia

The Camino Central Dalmatia is not just a walking trail; it is an immersion in the millennial history of pilgrimage to St. James, woven into the picturesque landscape of the Dalmatian hinterland and the Adriatic coast. This route, approximately 127 kilometers long, is part of the global Camino de Santiago network, and offers a unique experience that combines spirituality, nature, and the cultural heritage of Croatia.

The route is officially certified and well marked, ensuring easy orientation for pilgrims. It stretches over seven recommended daily stages, from the hinterland of Dalmatia (Cista Velika/Biorine) to the coast in Marina near Trogir.

Key features of the route:

Terrain type: The trail combines a variety of terrain: from gravel and field roads in the hinterland, through urban sections in Split and Kaštela, to seaside promenades.

Logistics: There is a solid infrastructure of accommodation (apartments, hostels, hotels) and catering facilities along the entire route, which makes planning easier regardless of the season.

Navigation: In addition to physical markers, you can use GPS tracks and maps available online for more detailed navigation and planning.

Kaštela: A coastal section with a soul

The passage through Kaštela is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque parts of the Central Dalmatia route. Our unique city consists of seven connected settlements, formed around medieval fortresses (castles) built on the coast or on cliffs in the sea.

The route through Kaštela covers a significant part of the pilgrimage:

1. Stage Klis Majdan – Kaštel Sućurac (23.3 km):
This stage takes pilgrims down from the heights of Klis towards the coast, ending in Kaštel Sućurac. The route offers spectacular views of Split and the Bay of Kaštela.

2. Stage Kaštel Sućurac – Seget Donji (20.3 km):
This is the stage that passes through the heart of Kaštela. Pilgrims follow the promenade along the sea, passing through Kaštel Gomilica (famous for its fortress on an islet, the filming location of Game of Thrones), Kambelovac, Lukšić, Stari, Novi and Štafilić. Each of these places offers the opportunity for a short break, a coffee or a meal in one of the local restaurants by the sea. The route is extremely pleasant and relaxed, ideal for soaking up the authentic Dalmatian atmosphere before continuing on towards Trogir.

Kaštela recently officially received the Camino certificate, making it an integral part of the European Camino family, which further confirms the richness of local heritage and the importance of this section on the pilgrimage map of Europe.

A key requisite for every pilgrim is a pilgrim passport (credential). It is used to collect stamps at checkpoints (churches, tourist offices, cafes) and is proof of the journey. Upon completion of the pilgrimage, with a filled-in passport, you can request an official certificate.
