Tourism before and now

Kaštela with its natural, cultural and climate particularities was always interesting to visitors. Its beauty was inspiration to many poets.
Andrija Kačić Miošić writes about Kaštela comparing them to the Promise Land. When Albero Fortis was traveling through Dalmatia he praised fertility and beauty of the Field of Kaštela.
A visit of the king Fridrich August of Saxony was recorded in 1838. He traveled through Kaštela in a carriage and in his memories wrote that Kaštela could be compared to the most beautiful and interesting places of Europe.
In September and October of 1852 a German novelist Ida Von Reinsberg Duhringsfeld visited Kaštela. She published her impressions in a book "Aus Dalmatien". She admired the white color of Kaštela, blue hues of olives as well as local customs and the way of life.
In 1894 participants of the 1st Old-Christian Congress which was organized by Dr. Frane Bulić visited Kaštela.
In the next year 1895 first groups of visitors who can truly be called tourists arrived from Germany.
Due to the fact that there were no basic prerequisites for stay of tourists in Kaštela "Society for Establishing Spas and Building of Bathing Beeches Lower Kaštela" was founded in 1899 at Kaštela. Its goal was building of necessary tourist objects. The Society ended its activity in 1903.
Antun Mlikotin, a wholesaler from Lukšić built in 1901 a large ten-room house meant for stay of tourists at Rušinac. Unfortunately, Mlikotin went bankrupt in1903. The house was sold and served for other purposes. Eventually, Railway vacation centre started its work in it in 1925.
The first pension with a beach put in order for bathing was opened in 1909 at Kaštel Lukšić by a Czech physician Dr. Henrik Šoulavy when he bought the Tartaglia – Ambrossini castle.
Dr. Petar Kamber opened the "Palace" Hotel at Kaštel Stari in 1928, as the most prestigious tourist building on the Kaštela Riviera.
In 1936 a "Municipal Bathing Beaches Commission for the Lower Kaštela" (Kaštel Štafilić, Kaštel Novi, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Lukšić) was formed. It had intention to better organize tourist activities and to improve tourist services.
Today tourists can spend their holidays at the Palace, Resnik, Adria, Kastel and Villa Žarko hotels, the Tamaris motel, in many rooms and apartments in private houses, and a few camps. Yachtsmen can find safe mooring at Kaštel Gomilica. Except for the sea, sun, bathing, cultural and historic monuments, Kaštela offer other entertainment (exhibitions, concerts, fishermen's feasts) and various sport and recreational activities (tennis, miniature golf, table tennis, fishing, mountaineering, walking). Many festivities take place at night at terraces, narrow streets, taverns and restaurants where local specialties are served. There are many organized excursions to near and farther surroundings.
Kaštela were rewarded with a bronze plaque "The Golden Flower Entente Florale" of the European Association for Parks and Environment in 2003.
